Australians spend billions treating back pain

A north Queensland researcher wants lower back pain to be a national health priority, after a study found Australians spend billions of dollars every year on treatments.
Dr Bruce Walker was part of a team from James Cook University which examined 3,000 people.
The research found almost 80 per cent of Australians suffer from lower back pain, spending more than $9 billion a year on pain relief.
Dr Walker says money is needed to research the causes.
"Low back pain should be a national health priority, it's not at this moment," he said.
"There's been very little in the way of research funds devoted to low back pain and we're of the view that there should be a much greater effort placed on low back pain research to try and prevent and then refine treatment for low back pain."
