William F. May is a Fellow of the Institute for Practical Ethics and Public Life at the University of Virginia. From 2002 to 2004, he served as a member of the President's Council on Bioethics. In 2001, he retired as the Cary M. Maguire University Professor of Ethics, emeritus, Southern Methodist University, where he also founded and directed the Cary M. Maguire Center for Ethics and Public Responsibility. A 1948 graduate of Princeton University, Dr. May received his bachelor of divinity (1952) and his Ph.D. (1962) degrees from Yale University. His numerous books include The Physician's Covenant: Images of the Healer in Medical Ethics (1983); The Patient's Ordeal (1991); and in 2001, The Beleaguered Rulers: The Public Obligation of the Professional.
A responder panel will follow the presentation including William Neaves, Ph.D., president and chief executive of the Stowers Institute for Medical Research, and Sandy Praeger, Kansas Commissioner of Insurance. A book sale and signing will follow the panel.
