The Department of Health and Human Services has been ordered by the Government Accountability Office to recover the salary paid former Medicare administrator Thomas A. Scully.
Because he ordered a staff member to withhold information about the cost of the new Medicare bill from Congress, according to a statement from Sen. Frank R. Lautenberg (D-NJ).
The GOA found Scully acted illegally.
WASHINGTON, DC – In a report requested by Senator Frank R. Lautenberg (D-NJ), the Government Accountability Office issued a ruling today finding that former CMS Administrator Tom Scully illegally ordered his staff to withhold information from Congress. The Department of Health and Human Services has been ordered by the GAO to recover Scully's salary.
"The Bush Administration went so far as to break the law in order to hide information about their flawed Medicare plan," said Sen. Lautenberg. "This was a corruption of the process at the highest levels. President Bush's former Medicare chief needs to pay back his salary, as the Government Accountability Office has ordered.”
“President Bush's former Medicare chief lied about the President's prescription drug proposal and withheld critical information, and he and others in the Bush Administration must be held accountable. What is still unclear is who in the Bush White House ordered Mr. Scully not to reveal this information," Lautenberg added.
"The bottom line is that the Bush Administration lied to Congress and lied to our nation's seniors about the future of Medicare," Lautenberg concluded. CONTINUES………..www.seniorjournal.com
