Australian scientists are turning to an unusual source in their fight against type two diabetes - they are studying burmese cats, which are prone to the illness.
They hope the research will lead to better diagnose and treatments for both animals and humans.
University of Queensland (UQ) scientists say the breed is an important aid to research.
"We know that burmese cats are predisposed to diabetes," Professor Jacquie Rand said.
"In fact, one in 10 that are eight-years-old or older end up with diabetes.
"That makes the breed a good target for research into the causes of the condition.
