askBMA, an on-demand telephone advice service, is to be made available to all BMA (British Medical Association) members from Wednesday 1 September 2004.
Following successful pilot schemes, the single-number service will provide doctors with instant employment information and help every weekday between 8.30am and 6pm.
BMA members can call askBMA on 0870 60 60 828 for all new employment advice and queries. Doctors can also contact askBMA by email (askbma@bma.org.uk) or via the Association's website (http://www.bma.org.uk) using the "contact us"link. The service will be available Mondays to Fridays except on UK-wide bank holidays.
Complex queries will be referred to the appropriate national or local BMA office for specialist staff to follow up. "The move to a single UK employment advice number will give BMA doctors fast access to the help they need and free up specialist staff to tackle the most difficult and time consuming issues" said Mr James Johnson, chairman of the BMA.
The BMA has 130,000 doctors as members representing all sections of the medical profession. It is both a professional association and the registered trade union for doctors.
