How do you know if your child has ADHD?

There are three main symptoms of ADHD. They are characteristics that cause your child to be incredibly active, more impatient than other kids your child's age, and will do rude things–not because he or she means to, but because he or she has this disorder. The main things you should look for are hyperactivity, impulsiveness, and inattentiveness in your child. This isn't just an attention disorder, ADHD is a problem with how children can control their behavior. ADHD tends to come on early in the child's life. He'll likely start having symptoms in the his preschool years. And if it isn't treated, he may have it for a decade or even longer.

What causes ADHD?

ADHD is typically hereditary. About 70 percent of all ADHD cases are inherited. A third of those who have ADHD also have siblings with the disorder. And in those who didn't inherit the disorder, your child may have had an injury of the front of the brain when he was a fetus that caused it to acquire the disorder. The other way children get ADHD is by their mother drinking alcohol or smoking during a pregnancy.
