To keep up with advances and identify future directions in these rapidly evolving fields, the CDB inaugurated a program of annual symposia covering diverse aspects of developmental biology and regeneration and aimed at promoting the free and timely exchange of research achievements. The first annual CDB Symposium, which addressed the "The Origin and Formation of Multicellular Systems," was convened in March 2003, followed by the second annual symposium, on "Developmental Remodeling," in March of 2004. We are pleased to announce that the third symposium in the series will focus on the theme of the "Origin and Development of the Vertebrate Traits", and will be held from April 11 to 13, 2005, in the CDB auditorium.

This symposium will cover subjects relating to vertebrate evolutionary developmental biology, with special focuses on the evolution of morphogenesis (Day 1), the neural crest, sensory systems and the brain (Day 2), and the genetic and cellular bases for the chordate body plan (Day 3). It is hoped that the broad scope of the presentations and disciplines covered will stimulate fruitful discussion and yield fresh new insights into the evolution of vertebrates, including ourselves.

Attendance to the CDB Symposium will be limited to approximately 120 general attendees. All those interested in participating are asked to submit an application for review by the organizing committee. Applicants are encouraged to submit poster abstracts with their applications.
