Advice that doctors should routinely report to police sexually activity of youngsters under the age of 13 must be withdrawn, say doctors leaders.
Writing in BMA News, medical ethics committee chairman Michael Wilks says new guidelines from the multiagency London Child Protection Committee override the careful professional judgement doctors exercise in deciding how to act in the best interests of child patients.
‘This guidance should be withdrawn,' he says. ' It will create confusion as to whether doctors can provide advice on sexual health to young people and could actually harm those children and young people it was designed to help.'
