Woman Granted Leave From Tennessee Prison for Abortion
|
Source : World News
Publish Date : 9/23/2005 3:53:00 AM
A prisoner in Tennessee will be allowed to leave prison to undergo an abortion after being granted a medical furlough by a federal magistrate judge, the Knoxville News-Sentinel reports.
The motion could be the first approval of a furlough for an abortion in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Tennessee. According to a motion by defense attorney Kevin Angel, Heather Natasha Marie Whitt, who was convicted of a federal crack cocaine conspiracy, discovered after her imprisonment that she was pregnant. "The pregnancy is high risk in nature and could expose (Whitt) to serious health risks," Angel wrote. Records show that the government is not paying for the abortion, but it is not known who is paying for the procedure. Whitt will be freed on Thursday and must return to prison on Sept. 27 (Satterfield, Knoxville News-Sentinel, 9/20).
